IPTV

Also called Internet Protocol Television, IP television

IPTV, or Internet Protocol Television, is a method of delivering television as data packets over an internet connection instead of through a cable line, a satellite dish or a terrestrial aerial. The programming is identical; only the delivery path changes.

IPTV is a delivery technology, not a category of content and not a legal status. Telecoms companies have used it to deliver licensed television for two decades. What makes any given IPTV service legitimate or not is whether the operator holds distribution rights, which is a separate question from the protocol.

Linear television

Also called live TV, linear TV

Linear television is programming broadcast on a fixed schedule that every viewer watches at the same moment, as opposed to on-demand content the viewer starts whenever they choose. A channel showing a match at 3pm is linear.

The distinction matters because linear and on-demand break in different ways. Linear cannot buffer far ahead — it is happening now — so it is far more sensitive to a weak connection than an on-demand film, which can fill several seconds of buffer before you notice a problem.

Video on demand

Also called VOD, on-demand

Video on demand, abbreviated VOD, is a library of recorded films and series a viewer can start, pause and resume at any time. Unlike a live channel, the file already exists in full on the server before playback begins.

Cord cutting

Cord cutting is cancelling a cable or satellite television subscription and replacing it with services delivered over the internet. The term dates from around 2010, when broadband first became fast enough to make the switch practical for most households.

By 2026 the original promise has partly unwound: households that cut the cord to save money often ended up paying for a live-TV bundle plus three or four on-demand apps, which together cost as much as the cable package they replaced.

Geo-restriction

Also called geo-blocking, geoblocking

Geo-restriction is the practice of limiting access to a broadcast based on the viewer's detected location, because television rights are usually sold territory by territory. It is why a channel available in one country returns an error in another.

Geo-restriction is a rights consequence, not a technical limitation. Any service that operates across borders has to hold rights for each territory it serves, which is why coverage claims are worth reading carefully.

Delivery and protocols

M3U playlist

Also called M3U, M3U8, m3u file

An M3U playlist is a plain-text file listing stream addresses, one per channel, that a player reads top to bottom. M3U8 is the same format encoded as UTF-8. It is the simplest and oldest way to load an IPTV line-up.

M3U works everywhere, which is its whole appeal, but it carries no programme guide, no catch-up and no series metadata — it is a list of addresses and nothing more. It also has to be refreshed manually when the provider changes the list.

Xtream Codes API

Also called Xtream Codes, Xtream API, XC API

The Xtream Codes API is a login-based method of connecting an IPTV player to a service using a server address, a username and a password. Unlike a static playlist, it lets the player request the channel list, the programme guide and the on-demand catalogue on demand.

This is the connection method to prefer where a player supports it. Because the player queries the server rather than reading a fixed file, line-up changes appear without any action from you, and the guide, catch-up and series metadata all work.

Stalker portal

Also called portal URL, Stalker middleware

A Stalker portal is a server-rendered IPTV interface originally built for MAG set-top boxes, configured with a portal URL rather than a username and password. The box displays a menu the server draws, so almost nothing runs on the device itself.

Because the interface lives on the server, a Stalker portal works on very low-powered hardware and updates without a firmware change. The trade-off is that the box is usually locked to its MAC address, so the provider has to register the device before it will connect.

HLS

Also called HTTP Live Streaming

HLS, or HTTP Live Streaming, is a protocol that cuts a video stream into short segments of a few seconds each and delivers them over ordinary web requests. Because it travels as normal HTTP traffic, it passes through firewalls and CDNs without special handling.

Segmenting is what makes adaptive quality possible: the player can pick a different bitrate for the next segment without interrupting playback. It also explains the small delay between a live event and an IPTV feed of it — the player is always a few segments behind.

Edge server

Also called edge location, edge node, CDN edge

An edge server is a delivery node placed geographically near viewers, which serves streams on behalf of a central origin. Distributing edges shortens the network path between the viewer and the video, which reduces both start-up delay and mid-stream stalling.

Edge distribution is the single biggest architectural difference between a service that holds up at peak and one that does not. A provider running one origin server can look flawless at 11am and collapse at kick-off, because every viewer is queueing for the same machine.

Load balancing

Also called anti-freeze, failover

Load balancing distributes viewers across multiple servers so no single machine becomes a bottleneck, and moves a stream to a healthy server if the one serving it degrades. In IPTV it is often marketed as an anti-freeze system.

Multicast and unicast

Unicast sends a separate copy of a stream to every viewer, while multicast sends one copy that the network duplicates only where paths diverge. Multicast is far more efficient but requires control of the network, so it is used by telecoms operators rather than over the open internet.

Nearly every internet-delivered IPTV service is unicast, which is why capacity is a real constraint and why edge distribution matters so much. A provider cannot lean on the network to do the duplication for it.

Players and devices

IPTV player

Also called IPTV app, player app

An IPTV player is the application that takes your subscription credentials, fetches the channel list and guide, and plays the streams. The player is separate from the service: the same subscription works in any compatible player, and the player you pick changes the experience considerably.

This separation confuses newcomers, because with cable the box and the service arrive together. With IPTV they are independent, which means a bad experience is often a player problem rather than a provider problem.

Set-top box

Also called STB, MAG box

A set-top box is a dedicated hardware device that connects to a television over HDMI and does nothing but play television. MAG boxes are the best-known IPTV examples, running a Stalker portal rather than general-purpose apps.

Dedicated boxes trade flexibility for reliability. They will not run other applications, but they also do not compete for memory with a dozen background processes, which is why they tend to be stable on hardware that would struggle as a general-purpose streamer.

Hardware decoding

Also called hardware acceleration, HW decoder

Hardware decoding uses a device's dedicated video chip to decompress a stream, rather than making the general-purpose processor do the work in software. It is dramatically more efficient and is usually a single toggle in a player's settings.

If a stream stutters on a device that should easily handle it, hardware decoding being switched off is one of the first things worth checking. Software decoding a 4K stream will overwhelm most streaming sticks.

Screen mirroring

Also called casting, AirPlay, Miracast

Screen mirroring sends whatever a phone, tablet or computer is displaying to a television over the local network. It is a fallback route to the big screen on platforms that will not run a suitable player directly.

Mirroring works but is a compromise: it adds a network hop, drains the source device's battery, and typically caps effective quality below what a native player achieves. Treat it as a workaround rather than a setup.

Guides and features

EPG

Also called Electronic Programme Guide, electronic program guide, TV guide

An EPG, or Electronic Programme Guide, is the on-screen schedule showing what is on each channel now and later. In IPTV it arrives as a separate data feed from the video, which is why a service can have perfect streams and a broken guide at the same time.

Guide quality is the most reliable indicator of how carefully a provider is run, and the hardest thing to fake. Getting a genuinely accurate multi-day guide across thousands of channels in dozens of timezones is unglamorous, continuous work.

Catch-up TV

Also called catchup, timeshift, replay TV

Catch-up TV lets you play a programme that has already been broadcast by selecting it from a past position in the guide. The provider records channels continuously and keeps a rolling window, commonly two to seven days.

Catch-up removes the need to set a recording, because everything within the window was recorded whether you asked or not. The practical limit is the window length: once a programme falls outside it, it is gone.

Pay-per-view

Also called PPV

Pay-per-view is a one-off broadcast, typically a boxing or mixed-martial-arts event, sold individually rather than as part of a subscription. Traditional operators charge $60 to $100 per event on top of the monthly bill.

Parental controls

Parental controls restrict access to categories or individual channels behind a PIN. On a well-configured IPTV service the adult tier is absent by default and has to be explicitly requested, rather than being present and needing to be hidden.

Multi-audio and subtitles

Also called audio tracks, subtitle tracks

Multi-audio means a stream carries more than one language track, letting the viewer switch commentary or dubbing without changing channel. Subtitle tracks work the same way, as selectable streams travelling alongside the video.

Availability depends entirely on the source broadcast. If the original feed carries one audio track, no provider can add another, so a service that claims universal multi-audio is overstating what it controls.

Quality and performance

Bitrate

Bitrate is the amount of data a stream uses per second, measured in megabits per second. It is a far better predictor of picture quality than resolution alone: a 1080p stream at 8 Mbps looks better than a 4K stream squeezed into 6 Mbps.

This is why resolution claims on their own mean little. A provider advertising 4K without stating a bitrate is describing the label on the box rather than what is inside it.

Adaptive bitrate streaming

Also called ABR, adaptive streaming

Adaptive bitrate streaming encodes the same content at several quality levels and lets the player switch between them mid-stream as available bandwidth changes. The result is a brief drop in sharpness instead of a stall when a connection dips.

Adaptive switching is why a stream can look momentarily soft and then recover. That behaviour is the system working correctly — the alternative to a soft picture for ten seconds is a frozen one.

Buffering

Buffering is the pause that occurs when a player has run out of downloaded video and is waiting for more to arrive. The stall is a symptom; the cause is somewhere along the path between the source server and the device.

Roughly two-thirds of the buffering reports we investigate resolve to the viewer's own wireless link rather than to the service. The diagnostic that separates the two takes about a minute: play the same channel over Ethernet.

Latency

Also called stream delay, ping

Latency is the delay between a moment happening and it appearing on your screen. In live IPTV it comes from encoding, segmenting, network transit and player buffering, and typically totals somewhere between eight and forty seconds behind the live event.

Latency matters most for sport watched alongside social media or a radio commentary, where being thirty seconds behind is obvious. It is not a fault, and reducing it means shrinking the buffer, which trades delay for stability.

Sustained speed

Also called sustained throughput

Sustained speed is the throughput a connection can hold continuously under real conditions, as distinct from the peak figure a speed test reports in a short burst. Streaming depends on the sustained number.

A line that bursts to 200 Mbps but drops below 20 Mbps every evening will buffer, while a steady 40 Mbps line will not. If you test your connection, test it at the hour you actually watch television.

Uptime

Uptime is the percentage of time a service is available. The figure is only meaningful with a measurement window and a definition of failure attached: 99.9% uptime allows roughly 43 minutes of outage a month, which is very different from 99% allowing over seven hours.

Channel zap time

Also called channel change time, zapping

Zap time is how long a player takes to display picture after you change channel. It depends on how close the delivery edge is and whether the channel was already being served, which is why popular channels usually switch faster than obscure ones.

Zap time is the easiest thing to test during a trial and one of the most revealing. Under two seconds on a wired connection means the edge is nearby; five seconds or more suggests a single distant origin, and it will get worse under load.

Buying and billing

Simultaneous connection

Also called concurrent stream, connection limit

A simultaneous connection is one active stream playing at a given moment. Connection limits count concurrent playback, not installations, so a single-connection subscription can be installed on every device in a home as long as only one plays at a time.

Confusing connections with devices is the most common misreading of an IPTV plan. Exceeding the limit produces a 'maximum connections reached' error rather than an extra charge.

Also called line, subscription line

A line is the trade term for a single IPTV subscription: one set of credentials with an expiry date and a connection limit. Resellers speak in lines because a line is the unit they buy, extend and issue.

Reseller panel

Also called reseller dashboard, credit panel

A reseller panel is the management interface a reseller uses to create, extend, suspend and troubleshoot customer lines, usually by spending pre-purchased credits. It is the operational core of any reselling business.

Free trial

An IPTV free trial is a short period of full access, commonly 24 to 72 hours, granted before payment so a buyer can verify performance on their own connection and device. A trial that requires card details is not meaningfully free.

The trial is the only test that matters, because it runs on your line, your device and your evening peak. Test the specific channels you are buying for rather than the flagship ones, which always work.

Lifetime subscription

A lifetime IPTV subscription is a single payment sold as granting permanent access. It is structurally unsound: bandwidth, licensing and support cost money every month, so one payment cannot fund indefinite service.

A lifetime offer only makes commercial sense if the seller expects to stop delivering, whether by degrading the service or disappearing. Treat it as a warning sign rather than a bargain.

Why this page exists

Loose terminology is how buyers get misled

Most of the vagueness in IPTV marketing lives in four specific words. Knowing what they actually mean is the cheapest protection available.

“4K” without a bitrate

Resolution describes how many pixels a frame contains. Bitrate describes how much data is available to describe them. A 4K frame has roughly four times the pixels of a 1080p frame, so it needs several times the data to look better rather than worse. Squeeze 4K into 6 Mbps and you get a soft, blocky picture that is measurably 4K and visibly worse than a well-encoded 1080p stream at 8 Mbps.

This is why we publish bitrates — 2 Mbps to 22 Mbps adaptive — rather than only resolutions, and why the honest question to ask any provider is not “do you have 4K” but “at what bitrate, and on how many channels”.

“Devices” used to mean connections

A provider advertising “5 devices” may mean five simultaneous streams, or five registered installations, or five before the account locks. These are materially different products. The precise unit is the simultaneous connection: one stream playing at one moment. Installations are usually unlimited and cost the provider nothing; concurrent streams cost bandwidth, which is why they are what gets counted.

“Uptime” without a window

A 99.9% uptime figure permits about 43 minutes of outage a month. A 99% figure permits over seven hours. Providers quoting uptime rarely state the measurement window, the definition of failure, or whether the number covers the streaming edge or just the website. Ours is a 99.9% target measured on stream availability at the edge, which is the number that describes your evening rather than our marketing.

“Channels” counted generously

Channel counts inflate easily. The same feed at four resolutions can be listed as four channels; a dead feed nobody has pruned still appears in the list; regional variants of one broadcast can be counted individually. A count is only comparable alongside how it was reached, which is why the useful question is whether the specific channels you care about are present and working — something a free trial answers definitively and a number on a landing page never will.
